Lorchel is a settlement of wooden buildings clinging to cliffs along the route toward Daybreak Pass. The company reaches it by carriage. Its leaning roofs, weak lanterns, and uneasy silence make an immediate impression on travelers looking for shelter and information about the mountain road.[1]

Before the pass
Lorchel marks a change in the demands of the journey. What can be carried by wagon, what the horses can manage, and what travelers know about the route all become practical concerns before the company continues into the mountains.
The chapel and the mountain
Brother Aelric provides an old route sheet when the company arrives. The main road continues through Daybreak Pass; the watch-stairs lie on a separate northern climb.

Improvement without erasure[2]
On the return, Brother Aelric reports fewer nightmares, a remembrance ledger whose ink no longer vanishes, and the resumption of ordinary travel. A missing child has not returned, even though his mother can once again hold his name. The town is recovering rather than restored without loss.
