The Sentinels of the Dawn are an earlier order associated with Dawnwatch Hold. Surviving histories describe wardens, soldiers, engineers, and line-keepers drawn from several peoples. Their records preserve the ordinary work behind the watch: repairs, supplies, rotations, and care for the place they held.[1]
In BONDS[1]
An inheritance of work
In BONDS, the Sentinels are understood through what they maintained and recorded as well as through their reputation. Their work raises questions about the knowledge they preserved and the responsibilities that outlasted them. Dawnwatch’s surviving manuals, records, and machinery let the company investigate those questions.
The disciplines of a watch
The Hold records health, repairs, food, and watch rotations with equal seriousness. Its ward manuals teach a sequence that can be checked and repeated, while equipment and workstations accommodate different bodies. Care is part of maintaining the watch.

An older foundation[2]
Dawnwatch’s lower passage reveals architecture older than the Sentinels. The Circle of the Sign predates them; the Dawn’s stronghold stands over that earlier work rather than accounting for its original construction.
Work inherited, a new order chosen[3]
At Ashaford, the companions decide that the older Sentinels’ work and failures both deserve attention. They found the Sentinels of Flame under their own terms. When they later reclaim Dawnwatch, they clean and fold the surviving old standards rather than raise them as if nothing had changed.
