Vaeril Myrthadar is known as the Mourning King. His name is bound to ruined Myth Celador, its damaged ley workings, and the devotion of the Shroud of Mourning. The novel reveals the man behind that title through surviving records, warnings, and the company’s encounter with the city itself.[2]

Appearance in the record and the throne room[3]
The damaged record presents Vaeril before his ruin as tall and regal, dressed in silver-and-blue robes embroidered with runes. His hair is pure silver, and his violet eyes show both fervor and exhaustion. The image preserves the appearance of an earlier king; it is not how the companions later find him.
In the throne chamber, his face is thin and sharply drawn, his once-silver hair patchy and tangled with white and dull gray. His robes lie in shades of funeral gray and old parchment. Blackened crystal projects through his forearms, neck, and spine, linking flesh, throne, and chamber with pale light. His voice is hoarse, while violet remains around the strange light within his eyes.
A king bound into the wound[2]
A damaged record shows Vaeril trying to stabilize the failing city by anchoring its ley lines through himself. The brief success gives way to catastrophic rebound. His will and grief become bound into the Shattered Nexus, and the Shroud later encourages his determination to remake the world around that loss.
The final release[2]
The companions learn that destroying his supports merely concentrates the burden in what remains. They open older receiving channels and share a controlled release. Vaeril eventually stops resisting; his binding unwinds and he dies. The damaged nexus survives without his imposed cadence. He does not know where Elowen went.
