Tavian Brenwick is an artificer, tinkerer, and caravan master preparing a winter delivery from Durnhollow to Branloch. His belt carries gears, lenses, wire, and small mechanisms; his attention returns just as readily to cargo weights, contracts, horses, and unreliable axles. He hires Sylas for the journey and gathers the people who first become his companions.[2]
An artificer on the road[3]
Tavian is a lean, ginger-haired man with quick movements, sharp eyes, and narrow features. Gears, lenses, wire, and unfamiliar mechanisms hang from his belt, making small sounds as he moves. His readiness to climb onto a bench and address a room suits a man who combines technical work with the business of persuading people to travel with him.
Running a caravan[4]
Behind Tavian’s jokes are maps marked with bridges and annotations, paired watches, small campfires, and explicit rules about wandering. He checks lashings himself and weighs prospective guards before offering terms. His shipment includes tools, brace-iron, oil, and survey equipment: ordinary working supplies whose delivery matters. The humor recedes when he discusses what the road and Branloch’s worsening troubles could cost.
Story & history[2]
The Branloch contract
His three wagons carry tools, brace-iron, oil, survey equipment, and other mining supplies. The outward route passes through Evermark, Yandir, and Trifang. Tavian’s running jokes coexist with a detailed knowledge of his freight and the practical work needed to keep it moving.

After the delivery[5]
When the company leaves Branloch with Lirael, Tavian remains at Thorek’s estate. He offers to manage messages, supplies, and a quiet point of contact for anyone following their trail.
The road to Dawnwatch[6]
Tavian later travels from Branloch with Thorek and a caravan to help rebuild Dawnwatch. His familiar concern with wagons and debts survives the company’s larger adventures.
