Selyna is an Elunari archive apprentice from Elarisel, where she grew up among the hill city's ward-lanterns and learned her letters in the shadow of the Moonspire. Ink-stained cuffs, a worn satchel and a long-handled scythe accompany her into a life that reaches beyond the records she knows. Her courage begins with a difficult choice: whether to keep her place within a familiar institution or speak when its records no longer tell the truth.[3]

Appearance[1]

Selyna has deep bronze eyes and first appears in an apprentice's robes, with ink at the cuffs and a satchel held close to her body. Her scythe rests across her back beneath its strap. She can look frightened without becoming helpless: a tremor in her voice or hands sits alongside a patient, practiced stillness. She studies the people around her before committing herself, and her composure often returns once there is a concrete task to do.

Personality[4]

Selyna's quietness is partly a learned means of surviving scrutiny. She understands how quickly an uncomfortable question can close a door, and speaking plainly costs her effort. Yet she is capable of nervous jokes, direct disagreement and admitting what she does not know. She does not wait to become fearless before acting. Once committed, she would rather risk her own position than hope that someone else will become brave on her behalf.

Knowledge & practical skills[6]

Archive work has taught her to follow requests, compare working copies with official records, and recognize dates, seals, index references and omissions. She also knows old maintenance folios and the civic language preserved in them. Her familiarity has limits. A copied access sequence can tell her how a first seal should answer without making her an experienced guide to everything beyond it.

On the road, Selyna checks horses’ legs, hooves, teeth and tack, rejects damaged fittings, and notices rubbing before it becomes a serious injury. She helps replace pack straps and gathers practical remedies, including feverroot and dried willowbark. Her willingness to attend to these repeated tasks makes her useful between crises as well as during them.

Equipment[7]

Her satchel carries scrolls, copied records, a thin ledger and carefully kept seals. Notes and a field book let her compare old catalogue information with what the company encounters. The long-handled scythe is first a working tool; when fighting becomes necessary, she uses its reach and hooked blade to pull an opponent off balance and protect companions nearby.

Story & history[3]

Knowledge with consequences[4]

Elarisel is Selyna's home, not simply her place of employment. She remembers its lanterns coming alight across the hills and associates the Moonspire with her earliest learning. Her attachment to the city gives practical urgency to her scholarship: damage to its institutions threatens places and people she loves.

Her loyalty to Elarisel does not require believing that its elders are always right. When familiar procedures protect omissions instead of exposing them, she has to decide what the records are for. Her answer places the city’s people and safety ahead of the comfort of remaining an unobtrusive apprentice.

Care as practical judgment[5]

Selyna turns concern into decisions the company must follow. A cracked buckle does not become sound because a stablemaster calls it good enough, and exhausted horses cannot recover the hours lost to a dangerous road. She insists on rest stops, rotating watches and admitting when a body has reached its limit. Her gentleness leaves room for firm disagreement when urgency would make the group careless.

Sylas: trust that permits disagreement[8]

Sylas gives Selyna room to choose whether she travels, then expects her to speak when her knowledge changes the group's safety. After she reveals her forms, their agreement is practical: scout ahead, communicate before a dangerous change when possible, and do not let fear of scrutiny withhold information the others need. In turn, she becomes willing to challenge his pace and insist that exhausted people and horses stop.

Lirael: two kinds of knowledge[9]

Lirael treats Selyna’s archive knowledge and understanding of living systems as working expertise. Their methods remain distinct, but they compare maps and indexes, read damaged currents together and continue repairing Dawnwatch’s conduits side by side. Selyna can name what a root system has done with a current while Lirael identifies the structure that channels it. Neither woman has to become the other to make the work possible.

Vahrenai: refusing expendability[10]

Vahrenai recognizes the survival habit behind Selyna’s concealment: she has learned to remain still so that people will not ask what else she can be. The recognition comes with a practical demand for honesty before a fight. Selyna later refuses to let Vahrenai confuse being useful with being expendable. Their understanding becomes action when she takes the Ursarion form to protect her.

Brann, Elara & Mythrien[11]

Brann makes her unusual abilities part of ordinary camp life, including jokes over stew and the less glamorous job of carrying her gear. Elara notices when Selyna substitutes a useful report for an honest answer about her own exhaustion. Mythrien protects the equipment she sheds in battle and supports her afterward. These relationships allow Selyna to be knowledgeable and brave without requiring her to be endlessly capable.

Joining the company[4]

Selyna approaches Sylas's company after discovering that Elder Arannis's requests for early warding and Veil records are disappearing from the official archive. She brings working copies and broken seals rather than asking the travelers to accept an unsupported accusation. The theft places her beyond the safety of an academic dispute. Below the city, her knowledge of civic phrases and witness-right becomes as necessary as the others' weapons and wardcraft.

Before leaving Elarisel, she sends Elandor copies of the evidence through a private record niche she once catalogued. She withholds the precise chamber location and access phrases so the report will not become another route into the endangered site. Sylas gives her the choice to remain; she elects to travel because the discoveries extend beyond her city and she can help identify what comes next.

A druid’s changing forms[12]

Selyna reveals her changing forms after the company has already survived an ambush that aerial scouting might have helped them avoid. Hawk suits distance, fox close ground and owl darkness. These familiar shapes can last most of a day while leaving her able to work afterward. Her bronze eyes remain recognizable, and she remains herself in every form. Clothing and small objects worn close change with her; the scythe and a full pack must be left behind or carried by a companion.

Heavier forms demand substantially more strength and may leave her unable to help for a day. Transformation also cannot solve every problem of terrain: dense, wet canopy can make flight more dangerous than walking. She learns to share the abilities and limits she once concealed, so the others can plan with her rather than discover an unfamiliar shape in the middle of a fight.

Sharing the burden[13]

At the Allfather Oak, Selyna admits that her grove once sacrificed one part of itself to preserve the rest, only for the cost to spread. She refuses to repeat that reasoning when Vahrenai offers herself to the wound. She also corrects Sylas when he tries to absorb Brann’s strain alone. Shared responsibility must actually move between people; it cannot become another name for using one of them up.

All six companions carry the strain together. The working braces the rupture without pretending the deeper wound is healed, and the light leaves pale, leaf-shaped scars on Selyna’s forearms. Her reverence for the forest does not require treating the suffering built into its survival as something sacred.

The cost of a shape[14]

In Edgewood, Selyna takes a lean, silver-gray wolf form to follow the damaged root-web. The change costs more than her familiar scouting shapes: she trembles, returns short of breath and has to admit that being able to continue is different from being well. Once they reach the anchor, her knowledge becomes more valuable than another transformation. Lirael reads the carved architecture while Selyna follows the current through living roots, and they stop whenever the repair resists.

In Myth Celador, she takes the Ursarion form to intercept a construct bearing down on Vahrenai. The massive body combines a bear’s frame with feathering, a raptor’s hooked profile and plated, taloned forelimbs. She pins the creature long enough for Sylas and Lirael to interrupt its pattern. Reverting leaves her shaking on the floor with a bleeding nose; she needs the ground beneath her before she can attempt the final work.

Grounding the shared burden[15]

During the final release, Selyna gives pressure a route into the older crisis-channels. She states her limit plainly: one more pull. Lirael checks that limit before the six enter the Heartwood bond, while Mythrien guards outside it. The release depends on Selyna’s contribution, but it does not restore the strength she has already spent.

Mythrien helps carry her from the ruins, and recovery remains gradual over the journey to Ashaford. Selyna joins the founding of the Sentinels of Flame there and, six months later, works on the reclaimed Dawnwatch Hold’s conduits and containment wards. She does not mistake rebuilding for proof that danger has ended. Her hope is that the company can make a life without pursuing every threat before it has recovered.
