Elarisel stands among twelve hills, with white stone, living greenery, bridges, canals, and visible wardlight. Elunari and Varlari share a prominent place in its civic life. Lirael knows the city through her earlier scholarly work, making it a place the companions associate with knowledge and stronger magical protections.[1]

A guarded welcome

Entry requires the travelers to account for themselves. Within the city, scholars, wardstones, memory sigils, and archives make knowledge part of the built environment. The relationship between Elarisel and its magical foundations is explored further in the novel.

Beneath the visible city[2]

The lower works include a convergence chamber, civic witness marks, constructs, and a steering chamber that redistributes load among the city’s wards. The companions preserve the main current while taking a damaged containment guardian off its feeds. The problem is a trusted system receiving bad instructions, not simply a monster loose beneath the streets.

A divided council[2]

Selyna’s records and a later captive’s testimony implicate Arannis in the Shroud’s access to old systems. Elandor is identified as an opponent, and Erlan grants limited aid. The text does not support calling the entire Hill Council traitors.
