This entry follows the subject as it appears in BONDS.
Durnhollow is Sylas Blackthorn’s home at the opening of BONDS. Its winter market, forge quarter, watchful guards, and working smiths are familiar parts of his life. Torin Stonefist raised him here after he arrived as a wounded child from Velmorras.[4]
Mountain setting[2]
Durnhollow lies within the greater Svartrheim mountain country. Mountain fortresses, stone roads, high passes, mines and upper valleys form the setting to which the city belongs.
Roads, resources & trade[1]
A defensible basin, dependable wells and access to deep metal make Durnhollow a natural stronghold. The convergence of northern roads also gives it a wider role as a fortress-market and provisioning center.
Heavy smithing supports an economy of tools, arms and structural metal. Quarry stone, engineering contracts, preserved food stores, mountain freight and caravan supplies form part of the city’s work. The roads connect this production with the needs of the neighboring holds and passing travelers.
People & civic identity[1]
Hrukenn form Durnhollow’s largest community, alongside permanent Valen, Veydran, Durkarr and merchant quarters. Its military identity belongs to the city as a whole rather than being reserved to one people. A dwarven stronghold and a mixed civic community occupy the same streets.
From citadel to city[1]
Durnhollow began as a Hrukenn defensive citadel. As several neighboring hold-roads were consolidated through its basin, it developed into a full civic stronghold. The city’s growth joined defense with the practical demands of moving goods, supplying travelers and sustaining work between the holds.
The Deep Bell[1]
The Deep Bell is Durnhollow’s distinctive civic warning bell. Suspended above a stone-lined shaft, it carries its sound into lower workshops and store vaults. An alarm can therefore reach people whose work takes them far below the open streets.
Streets & daily life[3]
In winter, wind drives snow through the market square while heat escapes from grates along the rising roads. Tools and polished steel share stalls with apples and lamp oil. Above the square, laborers move ore sledges along the inclines and apprentices carry coal toward the forge quarter.
After work, hall doors open onto laughter and supper. Maerra sells hot chestnuts from a brazier, and children dare one another to touch the polished bronze beard of an ancestral hero in a shrine alcove. Familiar routines continue around the work of a defended mountain city.
In BONDS[4]
Life among the forges[3]
Torin Stonefist took Sylas in after he arrived from Velmorras as a wounded seven-year-old. Stonefist’s private hall-forge became a place of training, work and ordinary companionship. Torin taught him restraint as well as fighting, while the wider city taught him shifts, guard habits and the sounds of good and bad metalwork.
The forge has room for banter, but work continues around it. Renn greets Sylas at the bench; a crossguard needs adjustment, rivets need setting, and a guard brings in a damaged spear. Sylas’s skill is part of the hall’s routine, with the same corrections and expectations that accompany everyone else’s labor.
His place in Durnhollow was not immediate. As an Elunari child, he drew curiosity, skepticism and some hostility. Thirty years later, established neighbors greet him without ceremony, crews make room for him, and Maerra scolds him for skipping meals. The city has become home through those repeated encounters.
The Silver Flask[4]
The Silver Flask stands in the lower quarter beneath a sign bearing a silver tankard. Its crowded common room draws dwarves, humans, regular drinkers and travelers. Here Sylas joins Tavian’s caravan bound for Branloch and meets Elara, Brann and Vahrenai; the yard behind the inn becomes their gathering place at first light.
The departure follows the northern market road through Durnhollow’s northern gate and into the outer mountain approaches. Beyond the lower pass, the road bends west toward Evermark, continuing through Yandir and Trifang toward Branloch. The inn connects Sylas’s settled life in the city with the road he has postponed taking.
