Brother Aelric tends a deteriorating chapel in Lorchel, wearing worn robes and a dulled sunburst pendant. He knows the local accounts of Daybreak Pass and the old northern watch-stairs. His help comes from a town already struggling with tremors, whispers, and unanswered prayers.[2]
Appearance and devotional objects[1]
Aelric’s robes retain little of their original white after years of smoke and wear. A dulled sunburst pendant rests against his unruly beard. He rises carefully from prayer and repeatedly closes his hand around the emblem when the conversation unsettles him, giving his concern a visible, physical expression.
A keeper of old routes[1]
Behind the altar, Aelric keeps a route sheet copied from an older source. He can describe the main pass and its northern spur, while distinguishing the journey he can estimate from the uncertain watch-stairs beyond it. He preserves old accounts without pretending to know everything they refer to, and admits when the danger above Lorchel exceeds his knowledge.
Story & history[2]
An old route sheet
Aelric provides a weather-stained route copied from an older account. It marks the main pass and a northern spur leading toward a refuge whose stairs are not found by every traveler.

The horses left in Lorchel[1]
When the company continues on foot, Brann gives the carriage and team to Lorchel. Aelric promises that the animals will be cared for, leaving the town with something useful from the travelers’ passage.
A contact for the new order[3]
Lirael’s closing reply to the Crescent Accord gives Brother Aelric at Lorchel, beneath the Ashfangs, as the contact through whom future field reports may reach the Sentinels of Flame.
