Torin Stonefist took Sylas into his care as a wounded child and helped him build a life in Durnhollow. Thirty years later, he remains the older man whose scrutiny can make Sylas feel young again. His affection is enduring, outspoken, and sometimes difficult to separate from his determination to keep his charge safe.[2]
Appearance and equipment[1]
Torin is broad through the body, with a beard, an aged face, and bronze eyes. His heavy, fur-lined cloak falls only to his knees. The armor beneath it shows long use and old campaigns, but is carefully maintained; its engravings preserve history as well as ornament. A walking hammer accompanies him, carried as much from habit as necessity.
Discipline and care[3]
Torin’s teaching joins strength to restraint. He trains Sylas to judge when fighting is necessary and to keep fear from deciding when a weapon is drawn. His concern can sound blunt and withholding, especially when Sylas risks mistaking stubbornness for courage. Even during disagreement, the practical language of roads, equipment, and consequences carries the fear of losing someone he has raised.
Story & history[2]
The standards of the forge
Torin expects work to be done properly and notices when Sylas’s attention wanders. Their exchanges combine correction, dry humor, and the familiarity of a long shared life.
Care and independence
His concern about Sylas’s wish to leave grows from affection and practical experience of danger. That concern does not always fit easily with the younger man’s need to decide for himself.
