The obsidian shard appears in the Epilogue as a carefully contained relic at Dawnwatch Hold. Its significance depends on the events beneath Myth Celador. The story details below include the outcome of that confrontation and the company’s later work.[1]

Recovered after the escape[1]

The shard is one of the crystals sheared from Vaeril. It is recovered during a later controlled survey of Myth Celador’s ruined throne level and kept in a cage of silver thread and glyph-etched iron.

Observation before explanation[1]

At Dawnwatch the shard changes orientation toward the conduit lines. Lirael, Selyna, and Vahrenai consider resonance with the ley, the company, or other fragments, but those possibilities remain unconfirmed. They move it into an isolated vault in dead rock, where its response stills. They choose continued containment while they prepare for further work.
