Althar

Steward of the Blackthorn household

STORY CODEX2 min read
A COMPANION TO BONDS

This entry follows the subject as it appears in BONDS.

Althar is the Blackthorn family’s longtime steward. He knew Elowen during Sylas’s childhood at the family estate and followed her son from Velmorras to Durnhollow. His silver hair is neatly tied back, and his composure carries the familiarity of someone whose care has continued through years of difficult change.[2]

Precision and responsibility[1]

Althar values the distinction between a fact and an explanation someone merely hopes is true. When he speaks about Elowen’s work, he separates what she believed from what she had proved. That precision also applies to his own conduct: he acknowledges that Sylas should have been told more, rather than defending every past silence as necessary.

A steady voice in the household[1]

Althar is willing to intervene when Torin and Sylas stop hearing one another. He places himself directly between their lines of sight and insists that responsibility must include room to choose. His manner is controlled, but his position is firm: Sylas cannot be expected to act as an adult while others retain every decision for him.

Story & history[2]

A continuing presence

Althar remembers the household Sylas came from and remains part of the home he builds in Durnhollow. His care is personal and practical, down to the provisions and salve he brings for the road.

Room for a choice

He can acknowledge uncertainty and mistakes without abandoning his concern for Sylas. His counsel asks the younger man to exercise judgment, including about the meaning he gives to painful questions.
