1. Fundamental Classification
- Type: Core World System / Metaphysical Boundary
- State: Stable (Whole) / Stressed (Thin) / Damaged (Wounded) / Ruptured (Tear/Breach)
- Domain: Trans-reality / Boundary-layer / Extradimensional Interface
- Primary Function: Maintain separation between Eldarûn and extranatural domains
2. Core Definition
The Veil is the metaphysical boundary that encloses Eldarûn within the order of creation and separates it from the outer immensities beyond it.
It is not a place, realm, or traversable world.
It is the threshold that defines where Eldarûn ends and everything else begins.
The Veil prevents the world from bleeding outward into the unknown, and prevents what exists beyond from entering freely.
2.1 Origin in the Cosmological Order
The Veil was not created by the Eleven, nor was it imposed as a later divine barrier.
It formed as part of the long stabilization of Eldarûn after the First Rupture, when the world’s structure resolved into a coherent and self-contained reality.
If the ley emerged as the world’s internal current during stabilization, then the Veil emerged as the boundary condition that preserved the world’s separation from what lay beyond it.
A simple way to understand the distinction is:
- the ley is the world-current within
- the Veil is the boundary that keeps that world whole
This means the Veil is natural in origin, older than the gods, and part of the world’s foundational architecture rather than a later divine construction.
3. Structural Nature
The Veil is:
- Omnipresent: existing across all regions of Eldarûn simultaneously
- Non-physical: not composed of matter, yet structurally real
- Layered: existing as a boundary woven through reality rather than surrounding it like a shell
- Elastic: capable of stretching, thinning, and tearing under stress
- Self-stabilizing: tending toward restoration when not actively disrupted
It is best understood as a boundary condition of reality, not a surface or barrier that can be walked upon.
4. Relationship to the World
Eldarûn exists entirely within the Veil.
All natural systems—land, sky, ocean, life, magic, and time—operate inside its protection.
The Veil does not create the world, but it preserves its separation and integrity.
Without it, the world would not remain isolated from external forces.
5. Relationship to Ley Lines
Ley lines and the Veil are distinct systems that interact under stress.
- Ley lines: the internal current and structural energy of the world
- The Veil: the boundary maintaining separation from external domains
Stable ley flow supports overall structural stability.
Destabilized ley structures place stress on the Veil.
Severe ley disruption—especially at nexus sites—may result in:
- thinning of the boundary
- formation of Veil wounds
- localized tears
- full breach conditions in extreme cases
Ley collapse does not guarantee rupture, but it increases the probability under sufficient scale and pressure.
6. External Domains Beyond the Veil
Beyond the Veil exist extranatural domains not native to Eldarûn.
These may include:
- alien dominions
- prison-realms
- hostile dimensional expanses
- fractured or dead realities
- non-linear or non-physical existences
- predatory or parasitic realms
These domains do not operate under the same rules as Eldarûn and are not part of its natural cosmology.
7. Extranatural Entities
Entities beyond the Veil may include:
- extradimensional beings
- imprisoned intelligences
- non-native consciousnesses
- reality-incompatible organisms
- ancient or formless entities
These beings are not part of Eldarûn’s natural order.
Distinction:
Aeshkar and Infernari are native to Eldarûn and are not Veil-origin peoples. The Aeshkar may be called Demon-kind, but that term does not imply extraplanar origin.
8. Veil Stress States
Stable
The boundary is intact and imperceptible.
Thin
The boundary is weakened but not broken.
Effects:
- increased sensitivity to external influence
- pressure anomalies
- sensory distortion
- dream intrusion or symbolic communication
Wounded
Persistent structural damage.
Effects:
- recurring anomalies
- environmental instability
- localized corruption
- unstable ley behavior
Tear
Active rupture in the Veil.
Effects:
- partial or intermittent crossing
- manifestation of extranatural entities
- localized breakdown of reality consistency
Breach
Sustained or widened rupture.
Effects:
- stable passage across the boundary
- prolonged external presence
- severe environmental and structural consequences
9. Interaction Without Crossing
Full passage is not required for influence.
Entities beyond the Veil may:
- communicate through dreams or visions
- influence thoughts or emotions
- respond to rituals or resonance signals
- establish contact with individuals or groups
- project partial manifestations
These interactions occur most often in thin or wounded regions.
10. Causes of Veil Instability
Veil instability may result from:
- catastrophic ley collapse
- destabilization of a nexus
- cascading failure across multiple ley branches
- prolonged corruption (including Blightfire saturation)
- large-scale ritual interference
- relic-driven boundary stress
- extreme resonance conditions
Minor disturbances do not produce rupture.
11. Repair and Stabilization
Natural Recovery
The Veil tends toward self-repair if stress is removed.
Assisted Stabilization
Possible methods include:
- restoration of ley stability
- sealing or reinforcing weakened regions
- containment of corrupted zones
- disruption of external influence points
Irreversible Conditions
Some damage cannot be fully restored:
- large-scale breach zones
- long-standing rupture sites
- regions tied to catastrophic ley collapse
- heavily corrupted or anchored tear-points
Such locations may remain permanently unstable.
12. Hard Limits
- The Veil cannot be freely opened at will
- Minor damage does not result in full breaches
- Most of the world remains fully protected at all times
- Large-scale rupture is rare and catastrophic
- External entities cannot freely enter without structural failure
- Influence is easier than physical crossing
12.1 Internal Portals Are Not Veil Breaches
Portal magic used to travel from one location in Eldarûn to another does not require opening the Veil.
Experienced and sufficiently powerful practitioners may create rare forms of spatial passage that connect two points inside the same world.
Such portal work manipulates spatial relationship within Eldarûn. It does not exit Eldarûn, pierce into another realm, or constitute a Veil breach.
Internal portal practice remains difficult, costly, technically demanding, sensitive to distance and destination, and far beyond routine use by ordinary practitioners.
The governing distinction is:
an Eldarûn-to-Eldarûn portal changes spatial relationship within the world; a Veil breach damages or crosses the boundary of the world.
12.2 Cross-Veil Portal Development
True portals from Eldarûn to another world or realm belong to a fundamentally different order of difficulty because they must interact with the Veil itself.
For most of known history, mortal portal practice does not provide reliable controlled passage beyond the Veil.
Following the great Breach, surviving practitioners begin to understand that the world-boundary can be manipulated rather than merely damaged. Powerful mages, witches, wizards, arcanists, and ritual scholars eventually test whether established Eldarûn-to-Eldarûn portal principles can be extended across that boundary.
This development is gradual. It requires years of experimentation and does not immediately create casual interworld travel.
The first successful cross-Veil portals remain rare, dangerous, energy-intensive, technically unstable, and dependent upon exceptional practitioners, anchors, or infrastructure.
Internal portal magic therefore predates the Breach. Controlled Eldarûn-to-elsewhere portal magic develops only after the Breach reveals that the Veil can be navigated as well as wounded.
13. System Summary
The Veil is the boundary that preserves Eldarûn’s separation from extranatural existence. It is not a realm, but the condition that keeps the world whole. While normally imperceptible, it can be weakened or damaged under sufficient stress, particularly through large-scale disruption of ley structures. When stable, it prevents all external intrusion. When compromised, it allows influence, manifestation, and in extreme cases, entry from beyond.
