Canon Decision & Open-question Ledger

Foundational Reference Entry — Open Questions, Resolved Decisions, and Technical Dependencies

1,553 words · 8 min readDeveloped entry

The Canon Decision & Open-Question Ledger records issues that are:

  • unresolved
  • provisionally solved
  • technically pending
  • dependent upon later cartography, chronology, or modeling
  • or important enough that the reasoning behind a lock must remain recoverable

A ledger entry should identify:

  • the question
  • current status
  • current working position
  • what is already locked
  • what remains open
  • what would settle the issue

The ledger does not replace codex canon. It records the state of decisions around canon and prevents unresolved questions from being mistaken for settled facts.

CEL-001 — Three-Moon Dynamical Verification

Domain: Celestial Structure

Status: PENDING TECHNICAL VERIFICATION

Question

Does the compact three-moon architecture remain dynamically stable across long astronomical timescales, and do its near-commensurate period ratios represent genuine mean-motion resonances?

Current Working Architecture

Seryn:

  • mean distance — ~384,400 km
  • sidereal period — ~27.32166 d
  • synodic period — ~29.53059 d

Nymara:

  • mean distance — ~504,035 km
  • sidereal period — ~41.0226 d
  • synodic period — ~46.2128 d

Kharos:

  • mean distance — ~610,150 km
  • sidereal period — ~54.6367 d
  • synodic period — ~64.2470 d

Approximate sidereal relationships:

Already Locked

  • Seryn's Earth-Moon-equivalent chassis
  • approximate Nymaran and Kharic mean distances
  • phase-cycle architecture
  • draconic-cycle architecture
  • ~36.06-year Grand Syzygy
  • triple-lunar-eclipse geometry
  • Kharos's broken state
  • ancient-major-shard / replenished-dust Shardwake doctrine

Still Open

What Resolves This Entry

Establish final physical parameters for Nymara and Kharos and run a sufficiently long numerical orbital integration.

If the relevant resonant angles librate, the applicable resonances may be promoted to hard canon.

If they circulate, the moons remain near-commensurate but non-resonant.

Either result is acceptable provided the system remains stable.

GEO-001 — Eldarûn Planetary Physical Chassis

Domain: Planetary Geography / Celestial Structure / Time

Status: RESOLVED — HARD LOCK

Question

What physical planetary scale is required for Eldarûn?

Decision

Eldarûn uses an Earth-equivalent terrestrial planetary chassis.

Locked values:

  • mean radius — ~6,371 km
  • mean diameter — ~12,742 km
  • mass — ~5.97 × 10²⁴ kg
  • Surface gravity — ~1 g
  • mean solar day — 24 h
  • sidereal rotation — ~23 h 56 m 4 s
  • axial tilt — ~23.44°
  • tropical year — ~365.2422 d
  • sidereal year — ~365.2564 d

Reason

These values preserve:

  • familiar Earth-like physical experience
  • the established calendar
  • ordinary seasonal behavior
  • expected climate structure
  • and the fixed Seryn orbital architecture

Seryn's orbital system and Eldarûn's planetary system are mutually dependent.

Change Control

This decision should not be reopened for ordinary worldbuilding preference.

Any proposed material alteration requires simultaneous re-evaluation of:

GEO-002 — Master Cartographic Constraint Integration

Domain: Planetary Geography / Lands & Realms / Narrative Continuity

Status: ACTIVE — CONSTRAINT LAYER RESOLVED / FINAL GEOMETRY OPEN

Question

What established geography must the final master map preserve, and what cartographic work remains legitimately open?

Current Resolved Position

  • established named settlements and story-critical places are fixed in relationship and may not be casually relocated
  • route order, travel durations, directional relationships, transport changes, and key settlement approaches are binding continuity evidence
  • the Ashrun watershed sequence and other established hydrological relationships are controlling where already locked
  • the seven-continent count and the Primary–Ferathi–Aeshkari macro-spatial relationship are fixed
  • the one-world-ocean / five-basin architecture is fixed
  • Part VII records the integrated reader-facing geography of Eldarûn
  • the master cartographic ledger retains technical authority for precise placement and unresolved geometry
  • external cartographic scaffolding remains outside Eldarûn canon and must not appear in reader-facing World Bible geography

Still Open

  • final continental silhouettes and proper names where not yet established
  • exact coastlines and ocean-basin boundaries
  • the final basin assignment of the western receiving ocean reached by the Ashrun
  • river and road polylines where not yet geometrically solved
  • forest, wetland, regional, and sea polygons or envelopes
  • mountain ridge and range-envelope geometry
  • remaining original-point solves and required detailed submaps
  • final world-map QA after the unresolved geometry is completed

What Resolves This Entry

Complete the remaining point solves, detailed submaps, and nonpoint feature geometry; reconcile the final map against Part VII and established narrative travel; then close the cartographic phase without reopening mature place identities merely because surrounding geometry was unfinished.

HIS-001 — Present Narrative Mortal Reckoning Year

Domain: History / Time / Narrative Continuity

Status: OPEN — INTENTIONALLY UNASSIGNED

Question

What exact Mortal Reckoning year contains the current narrative era?

Already Locked

  • the present broad historical age is the Mortal Age
  • Mortal Reckoning begins with the First Concord at 1 MR
  • the common civil calendar and leap-year structure are fixed
  • After Dawn is a separate Sentinel institutional reckoning
  • Year 311 After Dawn must not be read as 311 MR

Current Position

No exact current MR year is assigned. This is deliberate, not an omission to be filled by guesswork.

What Resolves This Entry

Construct the integrated historical chronology in Part IX far enough to place the current narratives without forcing arbitrary dates onto unresolved wars, migrations, institutions, divine-era transitions, or regional histories.

PEO-001 — Tazhuran Canonical Naming

Domain: Peoples / Geography / Reference

Status: RESOLVED — CANONICAL NAME LOCK

Decision

Tazhuran is the current canonical name for the ancestral crowned high-civilization lineage of Troll-kind. The older working term Zarandari is deprecated and must not remain in reader-facing canon.

Required Propagation

Parts II, VII, VIII, X, future maps, indices, and settlement/cultural references use Tazhuran unless an older historical document is intentionally quoting deprecated terminology.

GEO-003 — Upper Ashrun Cataract Placement

Domain: Geography / Hydrology / Narrative Continuity

Status: OPEN — FEATURE EXISTS / EXACT POSITION UNRESOLVED

Already Locked

· the Ashrun watershed and established settlement controls are binding

· Roaringwater remains on the east side of the Ashrun at the corrected Ashrun–Shimmerbrook confluence

· the corrected local confluence and bend may not be undone

· a major cataract exists on the upper Ashrun

Still Open

· exact cataract point on the recovered river geometry

· whether the working Skybreak Falls control is identical to the Upper Ashrun Cataract or represents a separate cataract

What Resolves This Entry

Direct registered-source or manuscript evidence sufficient to place the cataract without moving locked settlements or forcing unsupported river geometry.

COS-001 — Why the Victorious Pantheon Is Eleven

Domain: Cosmology / Divine History

Status: OPEN — DO NOT INVENT

Question

Why does the stable later divine order consist of exactly eleven gods?

Already Locked

· the Eleven arise after the Old Gods

· they are narrower, domain-defined powers compatible with a more ordered world

· they overthrow, bind, break, or suppress Old God rule

Still Open

Whether eleven is cosmologically inevitable, historically contingent, the number of surviving successful divine powers, a later mortal classification, or the result of another mechanism.

COS-002 — Divine Operations & Afterlife

Domain: Cosmology / Religion / Death

Status: OPEN — STRUCTURAL DOCTRINE NEEDED

Question

What is objectively true about where the Eleven exist, how they manifest or communicate, how sacred magic is mediated, and what happens to mortal souls after rightful death?

Already Locked

· Lethar governs death, boundary, judgment, and passage

· the gods do not mechanically operate every natural process

· divine intervention is real but does not replace ordinary causation

Still Open

The objective mechanics of divine residence, avatars/manifestation, communication limits, worship-strength relationships, soul destination, and the afterlife beyond culturally held doctrine.

MAG-001 — Global Hard Magical Prohibitions

Domain: Magic Doctrine / Continuity

Status: OPEN — EDGE LIMITS NOT YET LOCKED

Question

Which effects are absolutely impossible, which are merely extraordinarily difficult, and which are possible only under exceptional divine, relic, or failure-state conditions?

Candidate Issues Requiring Ruling

· resurrection or restoration of the dead

· reversal or rewriting of time

· creation of matter from nothing

· manufacture, duplication, or permanent imprisonment of souls

· perfect prophecy or absolute knowledge

· permanent total mind overwrite

· unrestricted long-range teleportation independent of ley and Veil conditions

Current Rule

Until resolved, existing specific canon governs individual cases. No new universal exception or prohibition should be inferred merely for convenience.

HIS-002 — Aesharath Historical / Ontological Status

Domain: Peoples / History / Religion

Status: OPEN — INTENTIONAL HISTORICAL AMBIGUITY

Already Locked

· the Aeshkar predate the Shatterpoints

· the Shatterpoints fractured older Aeshkari realms, clans, cities, routes, and political continuity

· Aesharath is associated with the later unification that becomes the Dominion

Still Open

Whether Aesharath is best established objectively as a historical sovereign, scar-prophet, mythologized unifier, semi-divine figure, or another category.

Current Use

Cultures may disagree. Do not resolve the ambiguity in omniscient canon until Brandon chooses to do so.

Open-Question Ledger Protocol

Unresolved worldbuilding questions that can affect multiple Parts are recorded here as formal ledger entries rather than being buried inside manuscript threads or treated as casual notes.

A listed question is not canon merely because it appears in the ledger. Its status determines how it may be used until a later decision resolves, narrows, or closes it.

Future entries should be added only when the issue has enough dependency or continuity weight to require recoverable decision history.
